I have lived in Portugal with my partner Karen for three years now, and we are always hearing about the Algarve and how popular it is, and how wonderful the beaches are..and how many English there are there.

These views often seem at odds with my views of where I chose to live, here deep in the heart of the Silver Coast region. I should make it clear perhaps, that I have never visited the Algarve at all, so my only experiences have been through the eyes of my friends and family who have been there.

When deciding where one wants to live, or indeed buy a property to use as a holiday home or for rental income, there are so many different influences and everyone has a personal opinion of what is best for them. There is no doubt that the Algarve has much to offer a foreigner in this wonderful country. There are the beaches for starters, the climate is really important, and the amenities play their part also. No one who has thought about Portugal as a destination for any of the above, could have missed the massive link to sport, in particular, golf, and way it has become such an important part of the tourism industry.

As for tourism, myself and my partner are involved to a small degree with our  bed and breakfast business, so we have a vested interest in seeing growth in the Silver Coast. Our part is a minor one, but there are many of us out there. Here is a link to my website.

One thing which seems to be common in all the regions of Portugal is the friendliness of the people and their willingness to help, and also to speak our language. Golf is probably the next biggest common denominator, with courses springing up all over the shop. In the region where I live there are 5 golf courses and more planned. Unfortunately, I am not in the least bit interested in the sport, but I do recognise the major role it plays in our potential for revenue.

So, what makes someone decide to live on the Silver Coast instead of the Algarve?

Perhaps it will become clearer over the next few posts.
